Alexis Llewellyn Dunbar, Ph.D.

Dr. Alexis Llewellyn Dunbar is a licensed psychologist. She completed her undergraduate degree at Emory University & her Master’s & Doctorate Degrees at a top ranked Clinical Psychology Program at the University of Houston. She graduated with high honor distinctions in clinical & adult psychology, then pursued her internship & residency training at the University of Texas Health Science Center-Houston Medical School specializing in child & adolescent care, addiction, & adult care. The Collegium Magazine featured her as a “Future Face of Healthcare."

A belief in the potential to change & grow is at the core of her clinical work. She believes in partnering with clients to meet goals & has spent over two decades working with adults, adolescents, & children. As a scientist-practitioner, Dr. Dunbar believes in using effective & established treatment methods. Cognitive-Behavioral (CBT), Acceptance & Commitment (ACT), & Supportive Parenting for Anxious Childhood Emotions (SPACE) are the primary forms of therapy utilized in her practice.

Clients with life changes or adjustments, trauma or distress, depression, bipolar disorder, anxiety disorders, personality disorder,  learning & behavior challenges have been a focus of her outpatient work. She has worked with serious & chronic mental health diagnoses in inpatient & residential settings.

Dr. Dunbar has specialty training & is well published in the areas of female health issues such as: pregnancy & postpartum mental health; pregnancy loss; premenstrual issues; adjustment following significant role changes such as entering or exiting relationships or changes in job status; menopause; relationship restoration; cancers & other chronic health conditions. Her other specializations are addiction & posttraumatic stress disorder/PTSD. She has worked extensively with women, men, adolescents & children to recover from trauma & with special populations such as combat veterans and victims of sexual and physical abuse and assault. Victim recovery work is a focus at KCPCS whether it be relationship hurts, abuse, or neglect.

Additionally, Dr. Dunbar offers diagnostic assessment services such as testing for: Attention-Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder; Giftedness; Learning Disabilities; Memory, Language, & Cognition; Emotional & Personality testing; & General Psychological Diagnostic Testing. Consultation services include in-home or at-school behavioral evaluations & adoption evaluations.

Dr. Alexis Dunbar taught graduate & undergraduate students since 1998-2012 at the University of Houston and Houston Baptist University. She is a member of several professional organizations & is a regular invited speaker and presenter at National and International conferences & local community events. She was honored with two military service coins for work training military chaplains & military mental health clinicians.

In her private practice, she maintains a balance of outpatient therapy, diagnostic testing, & research. Dr. Dunbar is devoted to her work with clients & also enjoys a full life as a Christian, wife, mother, runner, outdoor enthusiast, leisure reader, & these experiences also influence her work.
