A belief in the potential to change and grow is at the core of her clinical work. She believes in partnering with clients to meet goals and has spent many years working with adults, adolescents, and children. As a scientist-practitioner, Dr. Llewellyn believes in using effective and established treatment methods. Cognitive-Behavioral (CBT) and Acceptance & Commitment (ACT) are the primary forms of therapy are utilized in her practice. She has been working in mental health care since 1993.
Clients with life changes or adjustments, depression, bipolar disorder, anxiety disorders such as panic disorder and OCD, personality disorder, and learning and behavior challenges have been a focus of her outpatient work for many years. She has worked with serious and chronic mental health diagnoses in inpatient and residential settings. Dr. Llewellyn has specialty training and is well published in the areas of female health issues such as: pregnancy and postpartum mental health; pregnancy loss; premenstrual issues; adjustment following significant role changes such as entering or exiting relationships or changes in job status; menopause; couples/relationship restoration; cancers and other chronic health conditions. Other areas of specialization and publications are in addiction and posttraumatic stress disorder/PTSD. She has worked with men, women, adolescents and children to recover from trauma and with special populations such as combat veterans and victims of sexual and physical abuse and assault.
Additionally, Dr. Llewellyn offers assessment services such as testing for: Attention-Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder; Giftedness; Learning Disabilities and Challenges; Memory, Language, and other Cognitive Lesions, Emotional and Personality testing; and General Diagnostic Testing. Consultation services include in-home or at-school behavioral evaluations and coaching and adoption studies.
Dr. Alexis Llewellyn has taught graduate and undergraduate students since 1998 at the University of Houston and Houston Baptist University. She is a member of several professional organizations and has been an invited speaker and presenter at National and International conferences and local community events.
In her private practice, she maintains a balance of outpatient therapy, assessment and diagnostic testing, and research pursuits. Dr. Llewellyn is devoted to her work with clients and also enjoys a full life as a Christian, mother, wife, runner, outdoor enthusiast, and leisure reader, and these experiences also influence her work.
