Alexis Llewellyn Dunbar, Ph.D. - Katy Center for Psychology & Counseling Services

Dr. Alexis Dunbar is a licensed psychologist. She completed her undergraduate degree at Emory University & her Master’s and Doctoral Degrees at a top ranked Clinical Psychology Program at the University of Houston. She graduated with high honor distinctions in both general clinical & adult psychology, then pursued her internship & residency training at the University of Texas Health Science Center-Houston Medical School. The Collegium Magazine featured her as a “Future Face of Healthcare."

A belief in the potential to change & grow is at the core of her clinical work. She believes in partnering with clients to meet goals & has spent many years working with adults, adolescents, & children. As a scientist-practitioner, Dr. Dunbar believes in using effective and established treatment methods. Cognitive-Behavioral (CBT) and Acceptance & Commitment (ACT) are the primary forms of therapy are utilized in her practice.  She has been working in mental health care since 1993.

Clients with life changes or adjustments, depression, bipolar disorder, anxiety disorders such as panic disorder and OCD, personality disorder, & learning and behavior challenges have been a focus of her outpatient work for many years. She has worked with serious and chronic mental health diagnoses in inpatient and residential settings. Dr. Dunbar has specialty training and is well published in the areas of female health issues such as: pregnancy & postpartum mental health; pregnancy loss; premenstrual issues; adjustment following significant role changes such as entering or exiting relationships or changes in job status; menopause; couples/relationship restoration; cancers & other chronic health conditions.  Other areas of specialization and publications are in addiction & posttraumatic stress disorder/PTSD.  She has worked with women, men, adolescents & children to recover from trauma & with special populations such as combat veterans and victims of sexual and physical abuse and assault.  Victim recovery work is a focus at KCPCS whether it be relationship hurts, abuse, or neglect.

Additionally, Dr. Dunbar offers assessment services such as testing for: Attention-Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder; Giftedness; Learning Disabilities & Challenges; Memory, Language, & Cognition; Emotional & Personality testing; & General Diagnostic Testing. Consultation services include in-home or at-school behavioral evaluations & adoption evaluations.

Dr. Alexis Dunbar has taught graduate & undergraduate students since 1998 at the University of Houston and Houston Baptist University. She is a member of several professional organizations & has been an invited speaker and presenter at National and International conferences & local community events.

In her private practice, she maintains a balance of outpatient therapy, assessment & diagnostic testing, & research pursuits. Dr. Dunbar is devoted to her work with clients and also enjoys a full life as a Christian, wife, mother, runner, outdoor enthusiast, coach of youth track team, leisure reader, & these experiences also influence her work.
